Gvt, Pastors4ED rally farmers ahead of 2026/27 season

Pastors4ED, in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Water Resources Development, will on May 15 host a provincial early preparation of farming Inputs awareness campaign in Mberengwa as part of efforts to strengthen food security and improve agricultural productivity ahead of the 2026/2027 farming season.

Speaking ahead of the event, Pastors4ED National Founding Chairperson,  Councilor Idirashe Dongo, said the campaign marks a shift from training to implementation and monitoring of projects initiated by farmers following the 2023 nationwide training programme.

“We are now moving beyond training into implementation. Our goal is to ensure that farmers are adequately prepared with inputs, knowledge and market linkages before the start of the farming season,” she said.

The campaign, to be held at Mapiravana Homestead in Ward 12, Mabika Area, is expected to attract farmers, agricultural organisations, input suppliers, financiers and development partners from across Midlands Province and beyond.

The programme follows the successful nationwide agricultural skills training initiative conducted by Pastors4ED in 2023, which trained more than 30 000 farmers across Zimbabwe’s 10 provinces in apiculture, horticulture, aquaculture, beneficiation and value addition.

Dr Dongo said early preparation remained critical in ensuring food security and increased agricultural productivity.

“Early preparation is biblical. Proverbs 24 verse 27 says, ‘Prepare your work outside; get everything ready for yourself in the field, and after that build your house.’ As a nation, we must prepare now so that Zimbabwe will not lack,” she said.

Held under the theme, “Early Preparation, Bountiful Harvest: Building a Food Secure Zimbabwe,” the campaign seeks to create awareness on timely land preparation, climate-smart agriculture and input acquisition.

The Guest of Honour will be Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Water Resources Development, Professor Obert Jiri, who is expected to give a policy briefing on Government-supported agricultural programmes including Pfumvudza/Intwasa, mechanisation and irrigation development.

Organisers said the event will also provide a platform for farmers to engage directly with seed houses, irrigation companies, mechanisation service providers and financial institutions.

Practical demonstrations on soil testing, conservation agriculture, horticulture and apiculture management are also lined up.
