Three engineers from the Zimbabwe National Geospatial and Space Agency (ZINGSA) will represent Zimbabwe at the SpaceRaise Summer School in L’Aquila, Italy.
In a statement yesterday, the Embassy of Italy said that three Zimbabwean engineers, Brian Murima, Macdonald Gwaunza, and Priscilla Tagutanazvo will take part in an upcoming training programme bridging space science, data analytics, and social research.
“The engineers Brian Murima, Macdonald Gwaunza and Priscilla Tagutanazvo will take part in the training programme scheduled for May 18 to 22, 2026, which brings together young scientists and innovators working at the intersection of space science, data analytics and social research,” the Embassy said.
The Embassy noted that the participation of Zimbabwean engineers reflects growing scientific collaboration between Italy and Zimbabwe, particularly in emerging technologies and space-related disciplines.
“The SpaceRaise Summer School represents a platform for young researchers and engineers to engage in cutting-edge scientific exchange.
Italy is proud to support initiatives that foster international cooperation in science and technology, particularly those that empower young professionals from partner countries to build skills that contribute to global development,” it added.
The Embassy said the programme is designed to strengthen technical expertise while promoting cross-border knowledge sharing in areas that are increasingly shaping global development policy.
“We believe that collaboration in geospatial science and quantitative analysis is essential for addressing some of the world’s most pressing challenges, including climate change, urban development and data-driven governance,” it said.
The Embassy added that the inclusion of Zimbabwean engineers underscores the importance of inclusive participation in global scientific advancement.
“By bringing together participants from different regions, the programme ensures that innovation is not limited by geography but is instead enriched by diverse perspectives and experiences,” the statement read.
Zimbabwe has in recent years intensified efforts to develop its space science and geospatial capabilities through ZINGSA, focusing on satellite technology, earth observation systems and data-driven research.
Partnerships with international institutions, including European scientific agencies, have been central to building technical capacity and expanding opportunities for young Zimbabwean scientists in emerging technological fields.
