Kaizer Chiefs football manager Bobby Motaung made an emotional return to Harare over the weekend, rekindling ties with Zimbabwean stars Khama Billiat and Knowledge Musona as league champions Scottland beat CAPS United 2-0 at the National Sports Stadium.
Motaung, one of the most influential figures in the Chiefs hierarchy, spent three days in the capital as guest of Scottland president Scott Sakupwanya. On Sunday, he was part of the crowd at National Sports Stadium, wearing a blue Scottland jersey that made his allegiance clear.
For Motaung, the afternoon was a trip down memory lane. Former Kaizer Chiefs player, Billiat provided the assist for Musona, another former Amakhosi to score Scottland’s opener. The Chiefs boss was seen exchanging jokes with Sakupwanya after the final whistle, wearing a broad smile as the ‘Scotts’ secured another win.
While in Harare to support Scottland, Motaung also had his talent-spotter hat on. Sources close to the delegation said he was closely watching CAPS United players too. Scottland’s second goal scorer Panashe Mutimbanyoka, who troubled the Green Machine with his pace, is believed to have caught Motaung’s eye.
Motaung’s romance with Zimbabwean players at Naturena is well documented. Musona and Billiat were both Chiefs favourites during their spells at the Soweto giants.
Motaung left Harare yesterday after what insiders described as “fruitful engagements” with Scottland leadership, though no official word was given on potential player deals or partnerships.
