ZIMRA tightens net on illegal imports

The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) has intensified efforts to combat smuggling and the illegal importation of restricted goods, warning that products brought into the country without the required permits or in violation of import regulations may be seized and destroyed.

The authority said the move is aimed at protecting consumers, safeguarding public health, and promoting fair competition for businesses that comply with the law.

Among the products subject to seizure are counterfeit goods, expired products, unsafe merchandise, and restricted imports such as fuel, sugar, milk, poultry, meat products, second-hand clothing and footwear, batteries, plastic bags, candles, cement, and other regulated commodities listed under various Statutory Instruments.

In a statement, ZIMRA emphasized that enforcement operations are being conducted at border posts, warehouses, markets, and retail outlets across the country.

“ZIMRA may seize or destroy smuggled, counterfeit, expired, unsafe or illegally imported goods to protect consumers and support fair trade. Importers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with all applicable customs regulations and obtain the necessary permits before bringing goods into Zimbabwe,” the authority said.

The revenue collector noted that illegal imports undermine legitimate businesses, deprive the government of revenue, and expose consumers to potentially harmful products that have not undergone the required quality and safety checks.

Authorities urged traders and members of the public to source goods through lawful channels and report suspected smuggling activities to relevant enforcement agencies.

The crackdown forms part of broader Government efforts to strengthen border security, enhance compliance with import regulations, and support local industry by ensuring a level playing field in the marketplace.
