Zimbabwe’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Amon Murwira, met Austria’s Foreign Minister, Beate Meinl-Reisinger, in New York yesterday, to discuss opportunities for enhanced cooperation in diplomacy, trade, investment and development.
In a statement yesterday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade said the meeting underscored the growing importance of relations between Harare and Vienna as both nations seek to deepen engagement across multiple sectors.
“This morning, Prof Amon Murwira met with Austria’s Federal Minister for European and International Affairs, Beate Meinl-Reisinger, in New York to discuss bilateral relations and opportunities for enhanced cooperation between the two countries,” the Ministry said.
According to the Ministry, the discussions centred on strengthening diplomatic, economic and development partnerships, with both ministers exploring practical ways to increase collaboration for the benefit of their respective populations.
“The discussions focused on strengthening diplomatic, economic and development partnerships, with both Ministers exchanging views on ways to expand trade, investment, and economic collaboration for the mutual benefit of the two peoples,” the Ministry said.
The engagement comes at a time when Zimbabwe is intensifying efforts to attract foreign investment and expand trade partnerships as part of its broader economic development agenda.
The Ministry said Zimbabwe remains committed to promoting international cooperation through multilateral institutions and diplomatic engagement.
“Zimbabwe is committed to multilateralism, the peaceful resolution of conflicts, and a strong and effective United Nations system that ensures all countries, big or small, have a meaningful voice in global decision-making,” the Ministry said.
The meeting also carried significance as both Zimbabwe and Austria are campaigning for election to non-permanent seats on the United Nations Security Council, representing their respective regional groups.
“Zimbabwe and Austria are seeking election to non-permanent seats on the United Nations Security Council, representing their respective geographic regions,” the Ministry noted.
The discussions reflect a shared commitment by both countries to strengthening international cooperation at a time of growing geopolitical and economic challenges.
The talks are expected to further enhance relations between Zimbabwe and Austria while opening new avenues for trade, investment and development cooperation.
