Cabinet approves national quality policy

Cabinet has approved the Zimbabwe National Quality Policy (2026–2030), a framework designed to strengthen the country’s quality infrastructure, improve the competitiveness of local products and protect consumers from substandard goods.

Briefing the media on Cabinet’s decision yesterday, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister, Dr Soda Zhemu said the policy would provide a coordinated framework for enhancing Zimbabwe’s quality systems and creating a competitive business environment.

“The Zimbabwe National Quality Policy (2026–2030) provides a coordinated framework for strengthening Zimbabwe’s quality infrastructure and engendering a competitive and fair business environment, thereby enabling local companies to compete favourably in the regional and international markets,” said Dr Zhemu.

“The policy will ensure that goods are produced to agreed standards of measurement through accurate testing and certification. Ultimately, consumers will be protected from unsafe or substandard products.”

He said the policy is anchored on six pillars: Standardisation, Metrology, Accreditation, Conformity Assessment, Technical Regulations, and Quality Promotion and Use.

“Key interventions include the enactment of a Standards Act to recognise the Standards Association of Zimbabwe as the National Standards Body, strengthening the National Metrology Institute under SIRDC, and developing programmes to support Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises,” said Dr Zhemu.

Other interventions include expanding accreditation services for testing, calibration, certification and inspection bodies, developing a National Conformity Assessment Framework and a National Technical Regulatory Framework, as well as rolling out a structured National Quality Awareness Programme.

A comprehensive monitoring and evaluation framework will guide implementation of the policy and measure progress towards its objectives.
