The newly established Kasambabezi Border Post in Binga District is set to strengthen trade, improve connectivity between Zimbabwe and Zambia and unlock new economic opportunities for communities on both sides of the border.
Completed in May and now operational ahead of its official commissioning, the modern facility is already easing the movement of travellers while promoting formal cross-border trade.
Special Advisor to the President responsible for Monitoring the Implementation of Government Programmes and Projects, Dr Joram Gumbo, said the border post would stimulate economic activity, improve livelihoods and enhance Government revenue through increased formal trade.
“There is going to be increased legal trade between the two neighbouring countries, and local communities stand to benefit immensely. The border post will help curb smuggling, increase Government revenue and contribute to the national economy,” he said.
North Western Region Regional Immigration Officer, Bayton Madawo, said construction of the Border Post began in October 2025 and was completed on schedule, with Government departments already operating from the new premises.
“The project commenced in October 2025 and all major works have now been completed. The border post accommodates the Department of Immigration and the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority, and we have been operating from the new facility since the beginning of June,” he said.
Madawo said the border post currently processes between 40 and 50 travellers daily, the majority of whom are local residents crossing into Zambia for business, family visits and other social engagements.
The facility is expected to play a key role in expanding legitimate trade while reducing reliance on distant border posts such as Victoria Falls and Kazungula.
Residents and travellers from both Zimbabwe and Zambia have welcomed the development, saying it will significantly reduce travelling distances and costs while making cross-border business more convenient.
One traveler described the facility as a major milestone that would simplify movement between the two countries and enable small-scale traders to conduct business through formal channels.
“This border post is a welcome development. It will make crossing into Zimbabwe easier, help small businesses trade legally and strengthen relations between our two countries,” the traveler said.
Another local resident said the new crossing would improve access to Zambia for business, medical services and family visits, while reducing the burden of travelling through more distant border posts.
“The opening of this border post gives us confidence to do business through proper channels. It will reduce illegal crossings, improve security and create more opportunities for trade,” he said.
The Kasambabezi Border Post forms part of Zimbabwe and Zambia’s broader efforts to deepen bilateral cooperation by improving cross-border infrastructure, facilitating the smooth movement of people and goods, and promoting economic integration for the benefit of communities in both countries.
