Zimbabwe’s hopes of making a winning start to their three-match Twenty20 International series against India were dashed after the visitors secured a comfortable seven-wicket victory at Harare Sports Club on Thursday.
After being asked to bat first, Zimbabwe struggled to build momentum against a disciplined Indian bowling attack and finished on 125 for 7 in their allotted 20 overs. Wessly Madhevere top-scored with 39 runs, while Ryan Burl contributed 26 and Tadiwanashe Marumani remained unbeaten on 27, but the hosts were unable to accelerate during the closing overs. India’s pace spearhead Mayank Yadav marked his return to international cricket with an impressive spell of 2 for 18, earning the Player of the Match award.
India made light work of the modest target, reaching 126 for 3 in just 13.2 overs to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi stole the show with a breathtaking 50 off just 19 balls, smashing four boundaries and four sixes in a fearless innings that laid the foundation for India’s victory. Captain Shreyas Iyer remained unbeaten on 28, while Ishan Kishan added a fluent 35 to ensure there were no late scares for the visitors.
Zimbabwe’s bowlers found little assistance on a day when India’s aggressive batting dominated proceedings. Richard Ngarava claimed one of the wickets to fall, but the hosts were unable to apply sustained pressure as India raced to victory with 40 balls to spare.
Despite the defeat, Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza said there were lessons to take from the opening encounter. He expressed disappointment with the batting performance and questioned the quality of the pitch, while insisting his side would regroup ahead of the remaining matches.
The result gives India the early advantage in the series and continues an impressive start under new T20 captain Shreyas Iyer. Zimbabwe, meanwhile, will be looking for a much-improved batting display when the two sides meet again in the second T20I at Harare Sports Club, where victory will be essential to keep the series alive.
