Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Professor Amon Murwira, has arrived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to participate in the 49th Ordinary Session of the African Union (AU) Executive Council, scheduled for July 28 to 29.
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade said Zimbabwe’s participation underscores the country’s commitment to advancing the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and contributing to the development of a peaceful, prosperous, and integrated Africa.
“The meeting also offers Zimbabwe an opportunity to engage with fellow member states on matters relating to peace and security, trade and investment, climate resilience, infrastructure development, food security, and sustainable economic transformation,” the Ministry said.
According to the Ministry, the Executive Council will review policy proposals and make recommendations for consideration by African Heads of State and Government on strategic continental issues.
Zimbabwe is also expected to leverage the meeting to advance its foreign policy objectives as it continues implementing its engagement and re-engagement policy.
“As the country continues to implement its engagement and re-engagement policy, Zimbabwe is expected to use the platform to deepen bilateral and multilateral partnerships, while advancing its foreign policy priorities centred on economic diplomacy, regional cooperation, and mutually beneficial international relations,” the Ministry said.
The Ministry noted that discussions on sustainable water resources and safe sanitation systems are particularly significant for Africa’s socio-economic development agenda, given their role on improving public health, agricultural productivity, industrial growth, environmental sustainability and climate resilience.
“Improved access to water and sanitation supports public health, agricultural productivity, industrial growth, environmental sustainability, and resilience against climate change, key pillars in the attainment of the African Union’s long-term development blueprint, Agenda 2063,” the Ministry said.
Meanwhile the outcomes of the Executive Council meeting will help shape policy direction on several strategic issues before they are presented to the AU Assembly, reinforcing Africa’s collective commitment to sustainable development, unity and shared prosperity.
