The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has stepped up security measures ahead of this year’s Heroes’ Day and Defence Forces Day commemorations, announcing intensified nationwide deployments, roadblocks and patrols to maintain law and order during the holiday period.
In a statement the Commissioner-General of Police, Stephen Mutamba said the force had activated comprehensive security arrangements to ensure all commemorative events are held in a peaceful and secure environment.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police reaffirms its unwavering commitment to ensuring that all commemorative activities across the country are conducted in a peaceful, safe and secure environment,” the Commissioner-General said.
He said all Officers Commanding Police Provinces had been directed to implement enhanced security at national, provincial and district commemorations, as well as other public gatherings expected during the holidays.
“Police deployments, patrols, roadblocks, stop-and-search operations and surveillance activities will be intensified to uphold law and order and guarantee the safety and security of all citizens and visitors,” the statement said.
The holidays coincide with the end of the second school term, prompting police to urge parents and guardians to prioritise children’s safety and make proper transport arrangements to reduce road traffic accidents.
Motorists were advised to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and comply with all traffic regulations, with police cautioning against night travel due to reduced visibility, driver fatigue and the risk posed by stray animals.
The ZRP also encouraged members of the public to report reckless drivers by providing vehicle registration numbers and locations to the nearest roadblock or police station.
Police warned that operations targeting unregistered vehicles, vehicles without registration plates and those fitted with illegal beacon or blue lights would be intensified, with offenders facing arrest and prosecution.
Livestock owners were reminded to keep cattle off public roads, with the police warning that owners whose animals stray onto highways would be held liable under the law.
The force further reminded farmers and transporters that all cattle movements must be accompanied by valid stock clearance and veterinary permits, while the movement of cattle at night remains prohibited.
Beyond traffic enforcement, the ZRP urged the public to remain vigilant against crimes such as robbery, murder, theft, stock theft and gender-based violence during the holiday period.
Citizens travelling for the holidays were advised to secure their homes, avoid carrying large amounts of cash and refrain from sharing their travel plans with strangers.
Police also announced intensified operations against drug manufacturers, traffickers, suppliers and dealers, warning motorists against driving under the influence of alcohol.
The ZRP said officers would continue using breathalyser machines to detect and prosecute drunk drivers as part of efforts to curb road fatalities.
Members of the public were urged to report criminal activities at the nearest police station or through the National Complaints Desk on (0242) 703631 or WhatsApp 0712 800 197.
