Mauritius looks to Zimbabwe to bridge financial services skills gap

Mauritius is looking to Zimbabwe to help address a growing shortage of skilled professionals in its financial services sector.

Speaking at the Mauritius-Zimbabwe Business Forum at the Caudan Arts Centre today, Acting Director of the Financial Services Unit in Mauritius’ Ministry of Financial Services and Economic Planning, Dovina Pillay-Naiken, said Zimbabwe had a pool of skilled professionals who could contribute to the growth of Mauritius’ financial services.

“I think this is one area where there could be very close collaboration between Mauritius and Zimbabwe.

We are having a skill shortage because this is a sector that we want to grow. We already have Zimbabweans working in Mauritius, so there is scope for us to explore how we can further collaborate in this area,” she said.

Pillay-Naiken said the financial services sector remained a key area of Mauritius’ economic growth strategy, making access to qualified professionals increasingly important.

“Zimbabwe could become an important source of skills while Mauritius could provide opportunities for Zimbabwean professionals and business seeking to participate in the island nation’s expanding financial services industry.

Beyond skills development, Mauritius has also emerged as a significant channel for investment into Zimbabwe, highlighting the depth of economic ties between the two countries,” she added.

Mrs Pillay-Naiken revealed that foreign direct investment (FDI) injected into Zimbabwe through Mauritius had reached US$1.4 billion as of June 2025.

“The FDI stock is about US$8.5 billion, and out of that, US$1.4 billion has come through Mauritius as at June 2025,” The mission is expected to further strengthen existing economic links while encouraging Zimbabwean and Mauritian companies to explore opportunities in each other’s markets.
