President Emmerson Mnangagwa has congratulated Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema on his inauguration for a second term.
Hichilema was sworn into office for his second term yesterday, following his re-election, with regional leaders attending the inauguration ceremony in Lusaka.
In a statement at the inauguration ceremony in Zambia, Lusaka, yesterday, President Mnangagwa said Zimbabwe valued the strong historical and cultural ties between the two neighbouring countries and looked forward to deepening bilateral cooperation during Hichilema’s second term.
“On behalf of the government and the people of our nation, I extend our warmest congratulations to President Hakainde Hichilema on taking the oath of office today for his second term,” President Mnangagwa said.
He said Zambia’s peaceful transition and consolidation of political power demonstrated the country’s commitment to democratic governance and national unity.
“Zambia continues to serve as a beacon of democratic stability, peaceful governance, and unity on our continent.
Watching the peaceful exchange and consolidation of power today reminds us of the shared bonds of history, culture, and progress that deeply connect our two nations,” he added.
President Mnangagwa said Zimbabwe was committed to strengthening relations with Zambia, particularly in areas of economic cooperation, while advancing regional integration through multilateral institutions.
“We look forward to further strengthening our bilateral relations, deepening our economic cooperation, and working hand-in-hand within SADC and the African Union to build a more prosperous and integrated region for all our people,” he said.
The President also extended his well wishes to Hichilema and Zambian Vice President Mutale Nalumango as they begin another term in office.
“I wish President Hichilema and Vice President Mutale Nalumango abundant wisdom, excellent health, and immense success as they lead Zambia forward,” President Mnangagwa said.
He further called for continued strengthening of the partnership between Zimbabwe and Zambia, emphasising the enduring ties between the two countries.
“May the Almighty God bless the Republic of Zambia. May God bless our enduring partnership,” he said.
Zimbabwe and Zambia share longstanding historical, cultural and economic links, with the two countries maintaining close cooperation through regional and continental institutions.
The two neighbouring states are also members of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), where they work alongside other member states to promote regional economic integration, peace and security.
