Cabinet has approved the Chartered Secretaries (Private) Amendment Bill, 2026, paving the way for the transformation of the Chartered Secretaries Institute into the Chartered Governance and Accountancy Institute in Zimbabwe.
Speaking during yesterday Post-Cabinet Briefing, Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Dr Zhemu Soda, said the Bill was designed to bring the legislative framework governing the institution in line with contemporary professional and regulatory requirements.
“The Bill amends the Chartered Secretaries (Private) Act [Chapter 27:03] to modernise the legislative framework governing the Institute established under the Act by updating its institutional nomenclature, expanding its statutory mandate, and aligning its functions with contemporary governance, accountancy and professional regulatory requirements,” he said.
Dr Soda said one of the key changes would be the renaming of the institution to reflect its expanded mandate and the changing requirements of the professional sector.
“In particular, the Bill transforms the Institute into the Chartered Governance and Accountancy Institute in Zimbabwe and broadens the categories of professionals eligible to receive professional education, training and examination under the restructured institute,” he said.
The Minister said the reforms were intended to strengthen the development of specialised skills needed to support effective governance and professional standards in Zimbabwe.
“The amendments will strengthen the development of governance, accountancy, auditing and related professional skills in Zimbabwe,” Dr Soda said.
The proposed amendments come as Zimbabwe continues to strengthen professional regulatory frameworks and develop human capital to support effective corporate governance, financial management and accountability across both public and private institutions.
