Efforts to improve access to primary health care in Zvishavane are gathering pace, with construction of Makwasha Polyclinic now at an advanced stage and the facility expected to open before the end of the year.
Final works are underway at the clinic, which is expected to bring essential health services closer to residents and reduce the distance travelled by members of the community seeking medical attention.
Director of Zvishavane Housing and Health Services Tonderai Parayiwa said the clinic was part of a broader programme to expand health infrastructure in the town.
“This facility is aimed at providing health care to the Makwasha community and decongesting Zvishavane Hospital. It is one of six projects that we have planned,” he said.
Residents welcomed the development, saying the facility would make health care more accessible, particularly for women and other vulnerable groups.
“We used to walk long distances to seek medical care. This clinic will improve the situation,” a resident said.
Another resident said the facility would help address women’s health needs within the community.
“As women, our health needs will now be addressed within our community. Once the clinic opens, we will be able to access health care more easily.”
Residents also commended Government and the local authority for investing in community health infrastructure.
“We appreciate what the Government is doing. This initiative will improve the welfare of the community,” another resident said.
The project is being implemented by Zvishavane Town Council using devolution funds and is expected to serve a catchment population of approximately 9 000 residents.
The development is expected to strengthen decentralisation of primary health services by bringing basic medical care closer to communities.
Once operational, Makwasha Polyclinic will provide residents with easier access to essential health services while helping reduce pressure on Zvishavane Hospital.
