WHO HAS BEEN THE GREATEST FOREIGN PLAY TO GRACE THE ZIMBABWEAN SOCCER SHORES

From skilful midfield maestros to deadly strikers and uncompromising defenders, Zimbabwe has hosted some exceptional foreign talent. Here are some of the finest to ever play in our domestic league.

Derby Mankinka

For many observers, the late Zambian midfielder Derby Mankinka remains the greatest foreign player ever to play in Zimbabwe. Mankinka joined Darryn T in 1991 and despite a relatively short spell in the local game, his extraordinary talent made an enormous impression. He was a gifted attacking midfielder with exceptional ball control, vision and dribbling ability.

Joseph Kamwendo

The Malawian midfield genius became a key player for CAPS United during one of the most successful periods in the club’s history. Blessed with exceptional vision, superb passing and outstanding technique, Kamwendo could control the tempo of a match and unlock even the most organised defences. His crowning moment came in 2005, when he became the first foreign player to win Zimbabwe’s Soccer Star of the Year award.

Laughter Chilembe

When discussing the finest foreign defenders to have played in Zimbabwe, Laughter Chilembe deserves a place near the top. The Zambian international became a hugely influential figure at CAPS United. Excellent in the air, tough in the tackle and comfortable on the ball, he was, more importantly, a leader. Chilembe played a crucial role as CAPS United won successive league championships in 2004 and 2005.

Sandras ‘Chopper’ Kumwenda

Dynamos have had several memorable foreign imports, but Chopper remains one of their most celebrated. The Zambian striker was an exciting and powerful forward who thrilled the Glamour Boys’ supporters with his goals. He possessed pace, strength and intelligent movement, making him a constant threat to defenders.

Charles ‘The Chief’ Chilufya

At Highlanders there will always be one Chief, and that is Charles Chilufya – a firm favourite among the Bosso faithful. Chilufya arrived at Highlanders in 2000 and quickly established himself as an important figure. For supporters who watched him play, The Chief remains a special figure in the club’s rich history.

Webster Chikabala

The late Webster Chikabala was another outstanding Zambian talent who illuminated the Zimbabwean game. He became one of the players who helped make Mhangura a competitive force and remains one of the most talented foreign players associated with the club.

Ferdinand Mwachindalo

Not every great footballer becomes famous for spectacular goals and flashy skills. Some earn respect through consistency, determination and leadership. Ferdinand Mwachindalo was such a player.

Kelvin Kaindu

The Zambian arrived at Highlanders FC in December 1996 and quickly established himself as a dazzling right winger. His arrival was part of the rebuilding that produced the famous class of 1998, which went on to win four consecutive championships.

Ian ‘Kabanana’ Bakala

They don’t make them like this anymore. A midfield genius who helped CAPS United rule supreme in the mid-2000s. Bakala was a key figure during the club’s extraordinary 2004 championship campaign. CAPS United collected a record 79 points, losing only once, with Bakala one of the outstanding performers in the side. He finished runner-up for the Soccer Star of the Year award.

From Derby Mankinka’s breathtaking artistry to Joseph Kamwendo’s midfield mastery, Laughter Chilembe’s defensive leadership and Sandras Kumwenda’s goalscoring exploits – foreign players have contributed some of the most memorable chapters in the history of our local game.

But one thing is certain: the foreign players did not merely come to Zimbabwe to play football – they came, entertained, inspired and left an everlasting legacy.
