Only 1 in 10 Bulawayo LPG outlets licensed

Bulawayo has raised concern over fire safety in residential neighbourhoods after the city’s Fire and Ambulance Services Department revealed that only one in every 10 liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) retailers operating in residential areas is licensed.

The department warned that unregulated gas outlets and improper storage of gas cylinders were exposing residents and property to increased fire risks.

The concerns come as Bulawayo recorded 694 fire incidents between January and September this year, prompting renewed calls for improved fire-safety compliance in residential and commercial buildings.

“Unregulated gas outlets and improper cylinder storage continue to pose risks to residents and property. Only one in every 10 LPG retailers operating in residential areas is licensed,” the department said.

Authorities have since launched a joint operation involving the Fire Brigade and other regulatory bodies to inspect residential neighbourhoods and clamp down on illegal gas retailers.

The operation seeks to ensure compliance with safety standards and reduce fire risks associated with unlicensed outlets and the improper handling and storage of gas cylinders.

Fire officials have urged residents to buy LPG only from registered suppliers, warning against using outlets that do not meet the required safety standards.

The department’s concerns extend to the general state of fire safety in the city, particularly in older residential properties and crowded commercial buildings where structural weaknesses could hinder evacuation during emergencies.

Earlier this month, Bulawayo Chief Fire Officer, Mhlangano Moyo confirmed that a house fire in Cowdray Park, suspected to have been caused by an electrical fault behind a sofa, left a woman with burns and four children suffering from smoke inhalation.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control.

Authorities have urged residents to avoid overloading electrical sockets, switch off unattended appliances and ensure that smoke alarms and fire extinguishers are functional.

The department said public vigilance, adherence to safety regulations and responsible handling of potential fire hazards were essential to preventing avoidable incidents and protecting lives and property.
