Zim breaks into Africa’s top 15 economies

Zimbabwe is projected to become Africa’s 14th-largest economy in 2026, with its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) expected to reach US$65.92 billion, placing the country among the continent’s biggest economies.

In its October 2026 World Economic Outlook the International Monetary Fund (IMF) projects Zimbabwe’s economy to surpass those of Cameroon and Tunisia.

“Zimbabwe’s Gross Domestic Product is projected to reach US$65.92 billion in 2026, placing the country 14th among African economies based on nominal GDP.

Zimbabwe is expected to maintain a position ahead of Cameroon and Tunisia. The two countries are projected to record smaller economies during the period,” IMF indicated.

The Fund’s October outlook uses nominal GDP to compare the economic sizes of countries, measuring the value of goods and services produced at current prices and converting the figures into United States dollars.

“The nominal GDP measure provides a basis for comparing the monetary size of different economies,” the IMF explains.

However, the Fund cautions that nominal GDP is influenced by price movements and exchange rate fluctuations and should not be interpreted as a direct measure of real economic growth or improvements in living standards.
