ZHRC applauds progress on right to health

Zimbabwe continues to register notable progress in promoting the right to health, with the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission applauding ongoing Government efforts while urging sustained investment to achieve universal healthcare access for all citizens.

In a statement released to mark World Health Day, commemorated annually to celebrate the founding of the World Health Organization, ZHRC Chairperson, Fungayi Jessie Majome, said the country has established a solid foundation for the progressive fulfilment of the right to health.

This year’s commemorations ran under the theme Building a Healthier World for All,” underscoring the need for inclusive healthcare systems that ensure no one is left behind.

Ms Majome commended the Government for putting in place strong legal, policy and institutional frameworks that uphold access to healthcare. She highlighted that Section 36 of the Constitution guarantees every person the right to basic healthcare services, in line with global human rights standards.

“The country has made commendable strides in strengthening the health delivery system through initiatives such as the National Health Strategy, ongoing investments in primary healthcare, and plans to introduce the National Health Insurance Scheme,” she said.

The Commission also acknowledged the vital contribution of development partners and stakeholders who continue to support the expansion of health infrastructure and service delivery across the country.

Healthcare workers received special recognition, with Majome praising their dedication and resilience in providing essential services under often challenging conditions.

The ZHRC further welcomed increased public participation in national health discussions, particularly debates surrounding the Medical Services Amendment Bill, which it said reflects a growing awareness of the need to harmonise legislation with constitutional provisions guaranteeing the right to health.

While celebrating the progress made, the Commission emphasised that more effort is needed to address existing gaps and to strengthen healthcare delivery nationwide to ensure full realisation of the right to health.
