Minister Ncube Champions Local Currency Use and Innovation at ZEDCON 2025

Bulawayo, September 19, 2025 — At the Zimbabwe Economic Development Conference (ZEDCON) today, Finance Minister Prof. Mthuli Ncube laid out a clear vision for boosting Zimbabwe’s economic growth by promoting the use of the local currency and supporting innovation.

One of the main highlights was the push to encourage the use of the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) in day-to-day transactions. “We are working hard to price key services, such as fuel, in ZiG to strengthen confidence in our local currency,” Minister Ncube said. This initiative aims to reduce reliance on foreign currencies and stabilize the economy.

Minister Ncube also stressed the importance of nurturing the ICT sector. “Innovation is at the heart of our growth strategy,” he noted. “We must create an enabling environment with incentives for innovators, helping them grow and service global clients.” He praised companies like ZimWorks, a local business process services firm that has successfully expanded its reach beyond Zimbabwe, generating jobs and skills for the local workforce.

Going further, he proposed transforming Zimbabwe’s economic rhythm by creating a 24-hour economy. “To fully unlock our potential, we need shifts running around the clock and incentives that encourage businesses to operate 24/7,” he said. This would boost productivity and help Zimbabwe compete better globally.

Minister Ncube’s speech highlighted a multi-faceted approach focused on stabilizing the currency, fostering innovation, and modernizing the economy. “By promoting local currency use, supporting ICT, and encouraging a 24-hour business culture, we can forge a new path of sustainable growth,” he concluded.
