Residents in Gutu East have welcomed a free skills training initiative aimed at improving livelihoods and promoting self-reliance in rural communities.
The programme, spearheaded by the area’s Member of Parliament, Zvarevashe Masvingise, in partnership with Tonganyika Trust, is being rolled out across all 10 wards in the constituency.
Speaking at the launch, yesterday, Masvingise said the initiative was designed to empower communities and reduce dependency on external support.
“All this is being done to ensure that no one and no place is left behind as the country moves towards the National Vision. Residents must play their part in national development by contributing to the gross domestic product starting at household level. Dependence on donor aid should be a thing of the past,” he said.
The two-week training programme, which began on April 13, is offering courses in 13 disciplines, with about 1 000 residents from Wards 12, 17, 36 and 39 attending sessions at Batanayi Primary School.
Gutu East Constituency development coordinator Zvandasarira Mutimwi said the response had been encouraging, particularly among women and youths.
“The turnout has been impressive, with young women forming the majority, followed by youths and elderly women. After these trainings, Gutu East, especially Basera Growth Point, will never be the same as graduates begin to apply their skills for sustainable livelihoods,” he said.
Ward 39 Councillor, Cllr Ndinatsei Madzadzure, said the programme was breaking long-standing barriers, especially for women.
“It is encouraging to see young women, many of whom could not continue with education due to early marriages, taking up skills such as welding, electrical installation and driving,” she said.
One beneficiary, Tendai Chimombe from Mushwayi area, said the programme had transformed her outlook on life.
“I have been a housewife for two years, relying on my husband as the sole provider. This programme has come at the right time. I am now training in driving, mortuary science, events planning and welding all for free,” she said.
Eighteen-year-old Trust Mangoni, a student at Zimbizi Secondary School, said the training would help youths become self-reliant.
“With limited job opportunities, we need practical skills to create employment and reduce drug abuse among youths,” he said.
A similar initiative was previously held in Gutu South by Member of Parliament Pupurai Togarepi, benefiting over 400 residents.
The programme is expected to boost household incomes and stimulate grassroots economic activity across Masvingo Province.
