Innovation takes centre stage as Tertiary Institutions shine at ZITF

Zimbabwe’s tertiary institutions have taken a leading role at this year’s Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF), showcasing a wide range of innovative projects that highlight the country’s growing focus on industrialisation, value addition, and research-driven development.

Institutions including Harare Polytechnic, Kwekwe Polytechnic, Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT), Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Polytechnic, and Manicaland State University of Applied Sciences (MSUAS) exhibited cutting-edge technologies and home-grown solutions aimed at addressing national challenges in key sectors such as agriculture, transport, energy, and manufacturing. These innovations are in line with the Government’s Heritage-Based Education 5.0 model, which emphasises innovation, industrialisation, and the commercialisation of research.

Speaking to The Harare Post, at the ZITF, Kwekwe Polytechnic Public Relations Officer, Theresa Mberikwazvo, said the institution is transforming innovation into practical industrial solutions that connect economies, improve efficiency, and build competitive industries.

“Our institution developed a Wild Fruit Peeling Machine (Svuura Muchero), which enables value addition of indigenous fruits, reduces manual labour, and supports rural industrialisation,” she said.

She added that Kwekwe Polytechnic has also established a plastic recycling machine (Nanautso), which converts plastic waste into reusable materials, promoting environmental sustainability and income generation.

A student from Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Polytechnic, Jabulani Manava, said, in line with President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s Education 5.0 model, the institution is focused on producing heritage-based products that contribute to national development.

Meanwhile, Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT) is actively promoting the value addition of crickets and mopane worms by transforming them into innovative products such as chewy protein bars and mopane crackers. The initiative forms part of broader efforts to enhance food security, improve nutrition, and drive economic development in Zimbabwe, towards Vision 2030.

ZITF is one of the country’s premier annual exhibitions, bringing together local and international exhibitors to showcase products, services, and investment opportunities. Over the years, the event has become a strategic platform for promoting innovation, fostering industrial growth, and strengthening Zimbabwe’s position as a competitive player in regional and global markets.
