Zimbabwe has completed the delivery of 1,000 tonnes of grain to Mozambique under the ZimAid programme, with the final consignment handed over in Beira to assist communities affected by recent floods, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade said on Friday.
In a statement on, the ministry said Dr. Victor Matemadanda, Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to Mozambique, handed over the last batch of relief grain to Manuel Rodrigues Alberto.
“Zimbabwe has completed the delivery of 1,000 tonnes of the ZimAid grain donation to Mozambique,” the ministry noted.
The ministry added that the handover of the final consignment fulfilled a pledge made by Emmerson Mnangagwa to support victims of the disaster.
“Ambassador of Zimbabwe to Mozambique, Dr Victor Matemadanda, handed over the final batch of the relief aid in Beira, fulfilling His Excellency Dr E.D. Mnangagwa’s pledge to assist flood victims in various communities in Mozambique,” the statement read.
Government said the donation was meant to ease food shortages in areas where floods caused widespread destruction to homes, crops and livelihoods.
“The floods in Mozambique ravaged crops, destroyed more than 15,000 houses, and damaged around 37,000 hectares of agriculture,” the ministry said.
The Ministry said several provinces were severely affected by the disaster, including Sofala Province, Gaza Province, Zambezia Province and Maputo Province.
“The affected provinces include Sofala, Gaza, Zambezia and Maputo,” the statement said.
Zimbabwe’s assistance highlights continued regional cooperation in responding to humanitarian emergencies and natural disasters affecting Southern Africa.
The two neighbouring countries maintain close diplomatic and economic relations, with Zimbabwe often supporting regional relief efforts during times of crisis.
