Former Cabinet Minister Walter Mzembi has been granted US$1 000 bail pending judgment in a case in which he is accused of defrauding Government of US$2 million during his tenure as Tourism and Hospitality Minister.
Mzembi was granted bail by the High Court in Harare this Monday, with conditions including depositing the bail amount, surrendering his passport, residing at his Harare address, and not travelling beyond a 30km radius of the court.
He was arrested in June last year upon his return from South Africa. The charges stem from allegations that he donated television sets meant for 2010 FIFA World Cup fan parks without Treasury or Cabinet approval.
His lawyer, Mr Emmanuel Samundombe, said Mzembi remains in custody due to a mix-up in release papers but is expected to be released this Tuesday.
