Vice President, Kembo Mohadi, has expressed concern over rising cases of drug and substance abuse among youths, saying communities must work together to restore moral values and strengthen family structures.
Speaking during the Family Values Initiative programme in Beitbridge, VP Mohadi said churches, traditional leaders and parents had a critical role to play in guiding young people and promoting discipline within communities.
He said the country needed strong family foundations anchored on moral principles, cultural values and spiritual guidance to build a responsible and productive generation.
“We must restore the values that once held our families and communities together. Churches, traditional leaders and families all have an important responsibility in molding a disciplined and morally upright generation,” said Vice President Mohadi.
The programme brought together church leaders, Government officials and community members to discuss ways of strengthening moral responsibility and addressing social challenges affecting communities.
VP Mohadi warned that drug and substance abuse was destroying the lives of many young people and weakening family structures across the country.
“The rise in drug and substance abuse is destroying the lives of many young people and weakening families. This challenge cannot be left to Government alone. Communities, churches and parents must work together to protect our children,” he said.
He also stressed the importance of preserving African cultural values and instilling patriotism, respect and discipline in younger generations.
“Our cultural values teach respect, responsibility and unity. These principles must continue to guide us as a nation if we are to build peaceful and prosperous communities,” said Vice President Mohadi.
The Vice President said stable families were key to promoting national development and social cohesion.
“When families are stable, communities become stronger and the nation prospers. We must invest in moral development and ensure our young people grow up with proper guidance and direction,” he said.
Church leaders who attended the programme welcomed the initiative and pledged to continue supporting programmes aimed at strengthening family unity and empowering communities.
One church leader said faith-based organisations remained committed to supporting youths through counselling, mentorship and awareness campaigns against drug abuse.
“We appreciate the focus on family values because families are the foundation of society. As churches, we are ready to work with Government and communities in addressing social problems affecting our youths,” said the church leader.
The Family Values Initiative forms part of broader national efforts to strengthen communities, encourage responsible citizenship and promote social harmony across Zimbabwe.
