The Zimbabwe National Road Administration (ZINARA), in partnership with the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ), yesterday intensified the national road safety campaign through a pedestrian crossing awareness and road marking programme at Victoria Junior Primary School.
The initiative forms part of a nationwide programme aimed at improving pedestrian safety through the rehabilitation and repainting of pedestrian crossings, particularly around schools and other high-risk areas, as Government steps up efforts to reduce road traffic accidents and protect vulnerable road users.
In a statement, ZINARA said the programme demonstrates Government’s continued commitment to creating safer road environments for schoolchildren and communities across the country.
The event was attended by officials from the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Masvingo City Council representatives, school authorities, road safety stakeholders and learners.
“Through this national programme, ZINARA funded the procurement of road marking paint which was distributed by TSCZ to local authorities throughout Zimbabwe to facilitate the repainting and maintenance of pedestrian crossings within their jurisdictions,” said the road authority.
The programme seeks to enhance the visibility of pedestrian crossings and promote safer road use among motorists and pedestrians, particularly in areas frequented by schoolchildren.
ZINARA said the intervention was one of several initiatives being implemented nationwide in collaboration with TSCZ and local authorities to improve road safety infrastructure and strengthen public awareness.
“The initiative demonstrates the Government’s continued commitment to reducing road traffic accidents and safeguarding vulnerable road users,” said ZINARA.
The road authority added that improving pedestrian safety remained a key priority in efforts to build a safer and more efficient transport system.
“Together, we are building safer roads, safer communities and a safer Zimbabwe for future generations,” said ZINARA.
The programme is expected to be rolled out in other parts of the country as authorities continue implementing measures aimed at improving road safety and protecting pedestrians.
