The Polygamist takes Global Stage

South African award-winning filmmaker and producer Mandla N has praised the international success of the Netflix series The Polygamist, describing it as a major breakthrough for African storytelling and the continent’s creative industry.

The Stained Glass TV production has continued to attract global attention since its release on June 12, rising to number 3 on Netflix’s worldwide charts as of Thursday. The achievement is being regarded as a rare milestone for a locally rooted African production in the highly competitive global streaming market.

Mandla N, who is the founder and creative director of Black Brain Pictures and known for hit productions such as DiepCity, Isitha: The Enemy, Lockdown, and eHostela, said the success represents more than just entertainment recognition.

In a post shared on Facebook, he congratulated the production team, highlighting the significance of the series in elevating African narratives on the global stage.

He said the performance of The Polygamist demonstrates that African stories are capable of resonating with international audiences when authentically told and well-produced.

According to him, the global reception challenges long-held assumptions that world-class television content must originate from traditional entertainment hubs such as Hollywood.

Mandla N argued that African filmmakers are now proving their ability to compete at the highest level of global production standards while remaining true to their cultural identity.

He further emphasised that Africa’s diversity, cultures, and lived experiences provide a rich foundation for storytelling that deserves wider global recognition.

The filmmaker also commended Netflix and Stained Glass TV for investing in African content and helping to expand its reach to international audiences, saying such partnerships are crucial for the growth of the industry.

He noted that the success of the series reflects the growing demand for authentic African stories and the importance of supporting local talent and production companies.

Mandla N concluded that the achievement signals a shift in global entertainment dynamics, where African creators are increasingly finding space and recognition on major international platforms.

He said the success of The Polygamist reinforces the idea that when African stories are told by African creators, they can achieve global impact and influence.

The series’ strong performance continues to generate discussion across the entertainment industry, positioning it as one of the standout African productions on Netflix in recent years.
