The Zanu PF Women’s League has extended its humanitarian assistance to Zimbabweans returning through the Beitbridge Border Post, providing essential supplies to help ease the challenges faced by women, children and vulnerable families.
The donations, which included pampers, sanitary pads and fleece wrappers, were handed over at the country’s busiest entry point as part of efforts to support returnees arriving home.
Senator Maybe Mbohwa, who represented Zanu PF Secretary for Women’s Affairs, Senator Mabel Chinomona, said the items were selected after considering the immediate needs of mothers, children and families undertaking the journey back home.
She said the initiative was in line with President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s directive that returning residents should be received with dignity and compassion.
“The President’s directive is clear that returnees should be welcomed with dignity. As the Women’s League, we are responding to the immediate needs of our people by ensuring that women, children and families returning home receive support, care and dignity,” she said.
Sen Mbohwa said the donated items were critical in addressing challenges faced by vulnerable groups, particularly mothers travelling with young children.
“The supplies were carefully selected because they respond to some of the pressing needs faced by families during their return journey. Small interventions such as these can make a significant difference to those who are going through difficult circumstances,” she said.
The Women’s League said it would continue working with relevant stakeholders to monitor conditions at border entry points and provide assistance to returning residents.
Some beneficiaries welcomed the gesture, saying the donations had provided much-needed relief.
One of the returnees, a mother travelling with her children said the support had come at a critical time.
“We are grateful for this assistance because travelling with children requires many things, especially pampers and warm clothing. This support has helped us because we were not sure how we were going to meet all these needs immediately after arriving,” she said.
Another recipient said the sanitary products and fleece wrappers had provided comfort after a challenging journey.
“People usually focus on transport and food, but there are other important needs that families face. This support shows that our wellbeing matters,” she said.
The Women’s League said it will continue strengthening welfare support programmes aimed at assisting vulnerable groups at border entry points and communities receiving returning residents.
