Zimbabwe’s Gold export earnings surge

Zimbabwe’s gold export earnings recorded sustained year-on-year growth during the first half of 2026, reaching a peak of US$597.1 million in June.

Gold export earnings stood at US$498.3 million in January before increasing to US$549 million in February. Although earnings moderated to US$406.1 million in March, they recovered strongly to US$528 million in April and US$503.3 million in May before climbing to a half-year high of US$597.1 million in June.

In a recent report, Fidelity Gold Refinery said the sustained growth reflects both increased gold production and favourable global market conditions that have supported higher export values throughout the period.

“The consistent year-on-year growth in monthly gold export earnings during the first half of 2026 is a testament to the resilience and strength of Zimbabwe’s gold sector.

Every month, recorded improved performance compared to the corresponding period in 2025, demonstrating the sector’s capacity to sustain growth despite fluctuations in the international economic environment,” said Fidelity Gold Refinery.

The refinery said gold continues to play a strategic role in supporting Zimbabwe’s foreign currency generation and broader economic objectives.

“The rise in export earnings from US$498.3 million in January to US$597.1 million in June underscores the expanding contribution of the gold sector to national export earnings and foreign currency inflows.

This performance reflects stronger production across the value chain and favourable international gold prices, which have combined to enhance the sector’s overall contribution to the economy,” said FGR.

Fidelity Gold Refinery said sustained investment in the mining sector, coupled with efforts to formalise gold deliveries and improve production efficiencies, would remain critical in maintaining the sector’s positive trajectory.

“Gold remains one of Zimbabwe’s most strategic mineral resources, contributing significantly to economic growth, industrial development and foreign currency generation.

The encouraging performance recorded during the first half of the year highlights the importance of continued collaboration between miners, policymakers and industry stakeholders to sustain momentum and unlock greater value from the country’s mineral wealth,” it said.

Furthermore, the refinery noted that the sector’s performance reinforces Zimbabwe’s position as a significant gold producer in the region and provides a solid foundation for achieving higher export earnings in the second half of the year.

With global gold prices remaining firm and production continuing to improve, Zimbabwe’s gold sector is poised to remain a key pillar of the country’s economic growth agenda in 2026.
