Zimbabwe has reaffirmed its commitment to multilateral diplomacy and international cooperation following the participation of its Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Taonga Mushayavanhu, at a welcome luncheon hosted for newly elected members of the United Nations Security Council by United States Permanent, Representative, Ambassador Michael G. Waltz in New York, yesterday.
Speaking after the event, Ambassador Mushayavanhu said it was an honour for Zimbabwe to participate in the important diplomatic engagement, describing it as a reflection of the country’s growing role in multilateral affairs.
“It was an honour to attend the welcome lunch hosted by Ambassador Michael G. Waltz for the newly elected members of the United Nations Security Council. Zimbabwe values such opportunities for dialogue and engagement as we prepare to assume our responsibilities on the Security Council,” he said.
Ambassador Mushayavanhu said Zimbabwe remains committed to promoting peace, sustainable development and constructive international cooperation during its tenure on the Council.
“Our election to the United Nations Security Council is both a privilege and a responsibility. Zimbabwe is approaching this mandate with humility and determination to contribute meaningfully to the maintenance of international peace and security.
We believe that dialogue, mutual respect and inclusive multilateralism remain indispensable in addressing today’s complex global challenges,” he said.
He added that Zimbabwe was looking forward to working closely with fellow member states in advancing the principles and purposes of the United Nations Charter.
“Zimbabwe stands ready to engage constructively with all partners in pursuit of peace, development and prosperity for all nations. Our foreign policy continues to be guided by friendship to all and malice towards none, and we will carry that spirit into our work on the Security Council,” Ambassador Mushayavanhu said.
He said engagements such as the welcome luncheon provide valuable opportunities to strengthen relationships and build consensus ahead of assuming Council responsibilities.
“These interactions are essential in fostering understanding and cooperation among member states. Zimbabwe remains committed to listening, learning and contributing positively to deliberations on matters affecting global peace and security,” he said.
The luncheon comes as Zimbabwe prepares to assume its non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2027-2028 term after its election by the United Nations General Assembly in June this year.
The engagement provided an opportunity for newly elected members to begin consultations with existing Council members and key diplomatic partners on matters relating to international peace, security and global cooperation.
