Kariba boat tragedy death toll rises to 93

The death toll from the Rural Infrastructure Development Agency (RIDA) boat accident on Lake Kariba has risen to 93, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed.

In a statement, police said the latest figure had been recorded as of 11am on Tuesday, while releasing the names of 39 victims who have been positively identified by their next of kin.

The latest identifications bring the total number of victims positively identified to 83, following the identification of 44 victims announced on August 14.

Among those identified are Jeremiah Chakabvapasi (32) of Nyamhunga 1 in Kariba; Mereki Hwani (54) of Penyai Village under Chief Dandawa in Magunje; and Tanatswa Ncube (10) of Mujokeri Village under Chief Mola in Siakobvu.

Other identified victims include Siadembe Richard Junior (2) of Chiedza, Karoi; Eken Kapandura (2) of Kalundu Village, Chief Mola; Beauty George (29) of Gatchegatche Fishing Camps in Kariba; and Noah Msaka (40) of Nyamhunga 2, Kariba.

Police said all 39 names released in the latest update had been positively identified by the victims’ next of kin.

The tragedy has now claimed 93 lives, with authorities continuing efforts to identify the remaining victims.
