A 37-year-old man from Marondera has been fined US$300 for illegally trafficking eight lion teeth valued at US$20 000.
Kenias Sekero, who pleaded guilty to contravening the Parks and Wildlife Act, has been ordered to pay the fine by September 25, with failure to pay attracting a six-month jail term.
Sekero was arrested, on September 5, after trying to sell three lion canine teeth and five incisors in Harare’s Central Business District.
The court also ordered the recovered lion teeth to be released into the custody of the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks).
Zimbabwe’s wildlife protection laws prohibit the illegal possession and trade of protected animal parts, helping safeguard the country’s wildlife and biodiversity from exploitation.
Sekero was convicted under Section 59 of the Parks and Wildlife Act.
