Mashonaland Central Minister for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Christopher Magomo, commissioned the Masembura-Bindura water transmission pipeline, yesterday, in Bindura.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Minister Magomo said the project demonstrated the value of partnerships between local authorities and the private sector in addressing critical infrastructure challenges.
“The Masembura-Bindura water transmission pipeline is an important intervention in addressing the water challenges affecting Bindura and Freda Rebecca Gold Mine.
“I want to commend the partnership between Bindura Municipality and Mutapa Gold Resources, which has made this project possible. Such partnerships are critical in complementing Government efforts to provide sustainable infrastructure and reliable services to our communities,” he added
Minister Magomo said the project had effectively given Bindura Municipality two raw water sources, allowing the authority to draw water from both the Mazowe River and Masembura Dam depending on operational requirements.
“This project gives the municipality two raw water sources, namely the Mazowe River and Masembura Dam. This is a significant development because it gives the municipality greater flexibility and resilience in managing its water supply,” he said.
He said water from Masembura Dam had an additional advantage because it required fewer chemicals during the treatment process.
“Water from Masembura requires fewer treatment chemicals because of lower contamination upstream. This is important because it reduces the cost of production and allows the municipality to use its resources more efficiently,” Minister Magomo said.
The Minister said the project would also reduce the time required to fill reservoirs, improving the municipality’s capacity to maintain adequate water levels.
“The other important benefit is that the reduced treatment requirements will contribute to faster reservoir filling. This means that water can be processed and supplied more efficiently, which is critical for both residents and industry,” he said.
Minister Magomo said improved water availability was essential for supporting economic activity in Bindura, particularly given the municipality’s role as an important mining and commercial centre in Mashonaland Central.
“Reliable water supplies are fundamental to economic development. As Government, we remain committed to supporting projects that strengthen service delivery, improve the operating environment for industry and ensure that communities have access to essential services,” he said.
The commissioning of the pipeline comes as Government continues to promote collaboration between local authorities and private-sector players to address infrastructure and service-delivery gaps.
