Gvt commissions 6,000-Unit Smart City Project

Vice-President, Dr Kembo Mohadi, commissioned the 6,000-unit Great Dyke Smart City project during the belated World Habitat Day commemorations in Kadoma, Mashonaland West Province, yesterday.

Speaking during the commissioning Dr Mohadi said the development demonstrates the importance of partnerships between Government and the private sector in addressing the country’s housing needs.

“Access to decent and affordable housing is central to building dignified communities and improving the quality of life of our people.

We must therefore continue implementing practical solutions that expand housing opportunities and ensure that more Zimbabweans have access to secure and decent accommodation,” said Vice President Mohadi.

He said the Great Dyke Smart City project was a significant contribution towards Government’s target of delivering one million housing units by 2030 under the Second National Development Strategy (NDS2).

“The scale of this development reflects what can be achieved when Government and the private sector work together towards a common national objective.

“Such partnerships are critical in mobilising investment, expanding infrastructure and accelerating the delivery of housing across the country,” he said.

The Vice-President challenged developers to ensure that housing projects were inclusive, sustainable and responsive to the needs of different income groups.

“Modern cities must be planned with the future in mind. We must promote developments that balance economic growth, environmental conservation and the well-being of communities,” he said.

During the event, Vice-President Mohadi planted a Leopard (Mbada) tree, highlighting the importance of environmental conservation in sustainable human settlements.

Minister of National Housing and Social Amenities, Professor Paul Mavima and Mashonaland West Minister of State for Provincial Affairs, Marian Chombo, accompanied the Acting President during the commissioning.
