Zimbabweans have expressed excitement and support for the new luxurious train service, connecting Harare and Mutare, expected to enhance travel comfort and promote tourism ahead of the upcoming Sanganai/Hlanganani Kumbanayi Tourism Expo.
The service, which can accommodate 243 passengers, is a result of collaboration between the Ministry of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development, and the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ), supported by the Mutapa Investment Fund.
According to the Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Hon. Barbara Rwodzi, the train offers more than just improved transport—it presents a new chapter in domestic tourism.
“This luxurious train will boost connectivity between Harare and the beautiful Eastern Highlands while offering tourists a seamless and comfortable journey,” she said.
The Eastern Highlands, known for its stunning landscapes, waterfalls, and cool climate, are among Zimbabwe’s top tourist destinations. Improved access through rail travel is expected to encourage more domestic and international visitors to explore the region.
A test run from Chegutu to Harare was recently conducted, where tourism officials, NRZ representatives, and key stakeholders experienced the train’s comfort and efficiency firsthand.
CEO of the Tourism Business Council of Zimbabwe, Paul Matamisa, emphasized the wider impact on the sector:
“This development improves access to key destinations and strengthens Zimbabwe’s tourism appeal. By expanding travel options, we are opening up new opportunities for both business and leisure travel,” he said.
The train will support travel during the Sanganai/Hlanganani Kumbanayi Tourism Expo, scheduled for 10–12 September 2025, one of the country’s biggest tourism showcases. Its continued operation is expected to benefit both tourists and local travelers seeking a reliable and modern transport option.
Public response has been overwhelmingly positive, with many citizens taking to social media to praise the initiative. Comments highlight the comfort of the service and its potential to revive Zimbabwe’s railway system.
The partnership behind this development reflects a growing focus on improving national infrastructure through coordinated efforts among Government ministries, agencies, and strategic investment.
The luxurious train marks a significant step towards enhancing Zimbabwe’s tourism sector and providing modern travel options aligned with the country’s development goals.
