Zimbabwe to hold post-COP30 climate workshop

The Ministry of Environment, Climate and Wildlife has announced plans to convene a national stakeholder workshop to review outcomes of the COP30 climate conference and assess their implications for Zimbabwe’s climate action and development planning.

The Post-COP30 National Stakeholder Workshop will be held on Wednesday, December 17, at Rainbow Towers Hotel in Harare, with support from the United Nations Development Programme.

In a concept note released today, the Ministry said climate change has become a central global development challenge requiring coordinated international action under the UNFCCC framework.

“Climate change is now recognised as one of the major developmental challenges facing mankind. The challenge requires international action and contributions from every country,” the Ministry stated.

The Environment Ministry said COP30 focused on advancing decisions on climate finance, mitigation and adaptation, while initiating action on addressing loss and damage.

“The conference was expected to spearhead progress towards important decisions relating to renewed ambition in finance provision, climate change mitigation and adaptation, as well as kick-starting action on addressing loss and damage,” it said.

According to the Ministry, outcomes of the conference are expected to influence Zimbabwe’s development trajectory and policy direction across multiple sectors.

“The matters that were on the negotiations agenda and the presidency programme are closely intertwined with Zimbabwe’s development and the African continent at large.

“The outcomes of the conference will have implications across the country’s socio-economic sectors and define programming by government, non-state actors and development partners,” the Ministry noted.

This workshop comes as Government begins preparations for its third Nationally Determined Contribution.

“The workshop is being convened as Government kick-starts the process to elaborate the NDC3.0 Country Statement and strengthen the enabling environment for full operationalisation of the strategy document,” the Ministry said.

The meeting will focus on reviewing COP30 outcomes against Zimbabwe’s negotiating position, assessing implications for development planning, and outlining a national roadmap towards COP31.

“The objectives of the workshop are to discuss the main outcomes from COP30, examine implications for Zimbabwe’s development planning, and share the country-level activity roadmap towards COP31,” the Ministry added.

Expected outputs include a technical report on COP30 outcomes and a coordinated action plan for COP-related activities in 2026. Participants will include government officials, civil society organisations, youth representatives, UN agencies, local authorities, the private sector and the media.
