Agriculture expert urges farmers to prioritise soil testing

The Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development has urged farmers to prioritise soil testing to maximise the effectiveness of Nutriplant Organic Plus Fertilizer and boost crop yields.

In an interview with the Harare Post, the Ministry’s Agriculture Extension Officer, Chengeto Musavengwa, highlighted that many farmers apply fertilizers without understanding their soil’s nutrient composition, often resulting in wastage and lower crop performance.

“Farmers cannot afford to guess what their soil needs. Soil testing provides precise information for applying the correct dosage of Nutriplant Organic Plus Fertilizer, ensuring healthier crops and higher productivity,” Musavengwa said.

She explained that soil testing is crucial for efficient fertilizer use, preventing both over-application, which can harm the environment and degrade soil fertility, and under-application, which reduces yields.

“Knowing your soil’s condition allows you to apply only what is necessary, reducing wastage and improving efficiency.”

The officer added that soil testing also helps farmers make informed decisions about crop selection and planting schedules.

“Farmers can plan their crops according to soil needs, improving yields while maintaining soil health for future seasons,” Musavengwa said.

She emphasised the long-term benefits for sustainable farming. “Repeated misuse of fertilizers can degrade soil fertility and reduce productivity over time. Regular soil testing prevents nutrient imbalances and helps farmers maintain their land in good condition for years to come,” she said.

Musavengwa said combining soil testing with Nutriplant Organic Plus Fertilizer is an effective strategy for enhancing farm efficiency.

“Using soil test data to guide fertilizer application allows farmers to achieve better results. Nutriplant complements existing soil nutrients, corrects deficiencies, and helps farmers get the most from their crops,” she said.

She urged farmers to make soil testing a routine practice. “Smart farming starts with knowing your soil. Farmers who regularly test their soil not only increase yields but also ensure the long-term sustainability of their land,” Musavengwa added.

With rising fertilizer costs and the need for sustainable land management, soil testing is no longer optional. Experts say combining regular soil analysis with targeted fertilizer use is key to higher productivity and long-term agricultural success.
