Shurugwi booms as Vision 2030 projects take off

The mining town of Shurugwi is undergoing significant infrastructure development, with new shopping malls, hotels, and residential expansions transforming the local landscape in line with the government’s Vision 2030 and National Development Strategy Two (NDS2).

Among the most notable projects is the town’s largest shopping mall, which has reduced the need for residents to travel to Gweru for goods and services. New suburbs are also emerging in the surrounding mountainous areas, while a scenic hotel near the central business district is enhancing Shurugwi’s appeal as a regional hub.

Speaking during a tour yesterday, Shurugwi Town Council Secretary, Archibald Ncube said the developments reflect strong investment inflows.

“We have done well in terms of investments. We have attracted over US$5 million over the past five years. We have a shopping mall that has reduced travel times to Gweru for shopping. We have also approved several expansions of residential stands. We are moving in the right direction,” he said.

For the local community, the past is over as they begin to enjoy the fruits of the new business environment, courtesy of the Second Republic.

“I must say our President is leading us in the right direction. We are seeing the implementation of NDS2. We are happy the community is also benefitting through job creation,” Shurugwi North Constituency Legislator, Joseph Mpasi said.

“Business has been opened here in Shurugwi. I am happy to have managed to invest after President Mnangagwa opened this country for business. I want to pledge to bring more business in the town in support of the government’s NDS2,” an entrepreneur, Moses Zuva stated.

“It is difficult for one to get a decent job these days. I am happy for the expansion of our town that has brought me this job. It is refreshing that the investors are employing locals,” a resident said.

Government is equally impressed by the developmental projects that are in line with its industrialisation efforts.

“I have noted with admiration that most of the world-class infrastructure here in Shurugwi is indigenously owned, drives heritage-based socio-economic transformation, creates jobs, aligns with urban renewal and smart city concepts and provides affordable and quality services to residents underpinned by the mantra ‘Nyika inovakwa igotongwa igonamatirwa nevene vayo,” Midlands Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Owen Ncube said.

The massive infrastructure development in Shurugwi is not isolated, but is in sync with what is taking place across the country as the National Development Strategy Two comes into effect.

  1. The kind of development we want, thanks to the Second Republic for its infrastructure development commitment.
