Global seed giants target Zimbabwe as production hub

Global seed companies Klein Karoo Seed Production (KKSP) and Syngenta have identified Zimbabwe as a prime destination for large-scale seed production, citing the country’s favourable climate, strong seed systems and strategic shoulder season advantage.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, Professor Obert Jiri, hosted the prospective investors, with discussions centred on positioning Zimbabwe as a country of origin for global seed supply.

Professor Jiri said Zimbabwe offers unmatched agronomic conditions that enable producers to enter international markets earlier and remain active longer than most competitors.

“You need not worry about the climate. Zimbabwe has one of the best environments for producing a wide range of crops. Our unique conditions allow us to access global markets earlier and stay longer than most competitors,” he said.

He added that the country’s rapidly expanding blueberry industry demonstrates the quality, consistency and competitiveness of Zimbabwean agricultural produce.

“Beyond climate, Zimbabwe has one of the most robust seed systems in Africa, providing a solid foundation for investment in seed production,” Professor Jiri said.

The visit also explored opportunities to support Government’s Rural Development 8.0 agenda, particularly through the Village Business Unit (VBU) model, which has already established more than 1 400 operational units nationwide.

Local production of specialised vegetable seeds including alliums, carrots and brassicas is expected to drive rural industrialisation, improve productivity and boost household incomes.

The Ministry’s Directorate of Research is currently assessing the technical requirements for the proposed partnership, amid growing demand for Zimbabwean horticultural produce from markets in the Middle East and beyond.

This engagement underscores Zimbabwe’s ambition to transition from a net importer to a leading exporter of high-value horticultural products, while reinforcing rising global confidence in the country’s agricultural potential.
