Zim moves to protect nature with new Biodiversity Action Plan

The Government of Zimbabwe has approved the Third National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (2026–2030), aimed at addressing mounting threats to the country’s ecosystems, the Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Soda Zhemu, said during today’s post-Cabinet briefing.

The Minister highlighted the importance of biodiversity to Zimbabwe’s social, cultural, and economic development, noting that the country faces serious environmental challenges.

“Biodiversity is vital for the well-being of our people and the health of our ecosystems, yet it faces significant threats from unregulated land use change, pollution, climate change, habitat loss, invasive species, and resource exploitation,” Minister Zhemu said.

According to Minister Zhemu, the newly approved strategy seeks to halt biodiversity loss through a comprehensive framework that integrates conservation, sustainable use, and equitable benefit-sharing.

“The Third National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan aligns with national development objectives and international frameworks, emphasising inclusivity, equity, and inter-generational responsibility.

“It sets out 23 targeted actions and goals to ensure that our natural resources are preserved for current and future generations,” he said.

The Minister explained that the Plan will be implemented using a Whole-of-Government and Society approach.

“Implementation will be guided by a multi-level governance framework, led by the Ministry of Environment, Climate and Wildlife, with oversight from high-level authorities.

“This ensures coordination across all sectors and stakeholders, from local communities to national institutions,” he added.

Funding for the ambitious strategy is projected at an estimated US$200 million annually. Minister Zhemu said the Government will mobilise resources from multiple channels, including innovative financing mechanisms and a dedicated Biodiversity Fund to secure long-term sustainability.

He stressed that the strategy is a critical step towards mitigating environmental risks and ensuring Zimbabwe’s ecosystems continue to support livelihoods and economic growth.

“By adopting these measures, the Government is sending a strong signal of its commitment to protecting biodiversity, securing food and water resources, and fostering resilient communities,” Minister Zhemu concluded.

Furthermore, the approved Plan is expected to provide a clear roadmap for conserving Zimbabwe’s rich biodiversity while supporting sustainable development, in line with global environmental goals.
