Electrification of Battlefields Schools marks milestone in rural development

The Battlefields Primary and Secondary Schools and the Battlefields Business Centre in Bubi have been officially electrified, a development hailed as a major step towards promoting inclusive rural development and advancing the Second Republic’s vision of leaving no one and no place behind.

The electrification ceremony was officiated yesterday by Matabeleland North Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Cde Richard Moyo, and was attended by key dignitaries, including the District Development Coordinator for Bubi, Mr. Dube, Hon. Simelisizwe Sibanda, Member of Parliament for Bubi Constituency, local ZANU PF leadership, traditional leaders, members of the Joint Operations Committee (J.O.C), and officials from the Rural Electrification Agency (REA).

Council officials from the Bubi Rural District Council (RDC), including the Chief Executive Officer and council management, were also present, along with development partners supporting the initiative.

Under the leadership of President Dr. E.D. Mnangagwa, the Government has prioritised reforms across education and rural infrastructure, with the REA targeting 26 institutions in Matabeleland North — including schools, clinics, and business centres — to expand access to electricity in previously underserved areas.

During the ceremony, Cde Moyo emphasised the transformative impact of electricity on rural communities.

“The electrification of these schools and the business centre is more than just a utility upgrade; it is a catalyst for economic growth, improved educational outcomes, and enhanced quality of life for the people of Bubi,” he said.

The Minister also warned against theft and vandalism of public infrastructure, stressing that such actions undermine development efforts.

He expressed gratitude to the Second Republic for advancing rural industrialisation strategies, which aim to stimulate local economies and support the government’s broader economic agenda.

Engineer Sande, Provincial Rural Electrification Manager from REA, noted that electrification projects are part of a nationwide push to modernise rural infrastructure and create sustainable opportunities for citizens.

The initiative reflects the Government’s commitment to inclusive development, ensuring that even remote communities benefit from national growth programmes.

By connecting schools and business centres to electricity, the government is enabling access to modern educational tools, supporting small enterprises, and fostering broader socio-economic development in Matabeleland North.

The electrification of Battlefields schools and Business Centre demonstrates the Second Republic’s dedication to rural empowerment and the ongoing transformation of Zimbabwe’s provincial landscapes, in line with Vision 2030 objectives.
