Multi-award-winning rapper, songwriter, and musician Ti-Gonzi was arrested yesterday in Mbare, Harare, on charges of reckless driving and possession of illegal drugs.
Born Patrick Kauma Tarugarira and originally from Hopley, the 29-year-old artist was apprehended at the intersection of Cripps and Remembrance Roads, near Mupedzanhamo, after traffic officers noticed his erratic driving. Police said Ti-Gonzi was driving without a valid licence when he drew their attention.
A subsequent search of his black Mercedes Benz reportedly revealed a half-bottle of Benylin cough mixture, two prepared twists of dagga, and two sachets of the drug.
Harare provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, confirmed the arrest, stating:
“The individual was taken into custody for contravening multiple sections of the Road Traffic Act, Chapter 13:11. These included reckless driving (Section 53), operating a vehicle without a driver’s licence (Section 6), failing to comply with police instructions (Section 72), and possession of illegal drugs.”
Ti-Gonzi is expected to appear in court as investigations into the incident continue. Authorities have warned that reckless driving and drug-related offences will be dealt with strictly under the law.
