Govt steps up urban road rehabilitation

The Government has stepped up efforts to rehabilitate urban roads as part of a broader programme to improve road safety and ease traffic congestion in major cities.

The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development has announced the temporary partial closure of Solomon Mujuru Road, formerly Kirkman Road, and urged motorists to use alternative routes on Thursday 5 February, 2026.

In a statement, the ministry said the road will be partially closed for all-day roadworks and advised motorists and commuters to plan their journeys accordingly.

“Motorists are strongly encouraged to use alternative routes and allow extra travel time for possible delays. Please exercise patience, drive with caution, obey all road signs, and follow instructions from traffic controllers. We regret any inconvenience caused and appreciate the public’s cooperation during this essential upgrade,” the statement read.

The closure will affect the stretch between the N Richards turn-off and the Sanganayi Inn junction to allow for essential rehabilitation works, including resurfacing and related infrastructure improvements, aimed at enhancing safety and extending the lifespan of the road.

The ministry said traffic management measures will be in place, with signage and traffic controllers deployed to ensure smooth flow and minimise congestion.

The works form part of the Government’s #KilometerByKilometer initiative, a nationwide programme targeting safer, smoother and more reliable roads, particularly in high-traffic urban areas.

Authorities said similar rehabilitation works are underway or planned across several urban areas as Government accelerates its infrastructure development programme.
