US$2.5m boost transforms Mberengwa

Private sector investments worth more than US$2.5 million are transforming Mberengwa District, with new commercial and social infrastructure set to spur local economic growth, expand access to essential services and accelerate progress towards Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030.

Driven largely by domestic investors taking advantage of opportunities under the Second Republic, the developments include a new shopping mall, fuel service station, casualty and conference centre, and a lodge in the mineral-rich district.

Government officials said the rising investment profile in Mberengwa reflects broader development momentum under NDS2, with infrastructure-led growth acting as a catalyst for economic transformation.

Midlands Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Owen Ncube, said the US$2.5 million GTS Complex highlights the crucial role of private capital.

“This project shows what is possible within the enabling investment environment created by the Second Republic. Government remains committed to working with local investors to achieve upper-middle-income status by 2030,” he said.

Mberengwa Central legislator, Tinashe Shumba, who funded the projects, said the investment was driven by the need to bring essential services closer to the community.

“People here have travelled long distances for years. We wanted to change that. This initiative aligns with President Mnangagwa’s vision of inclusive development that leaves no one and no place behind.” He added that improved macroeconomic stability has strengthened private sector confidence,” he said.

Local miners welcomed the infrastructure, saying it addresses long-standing service delivery gaps.

“We used to travel to Zvishavane even for basic or emergency services. Having a casualty centre, fuel and retail services right here will save time, money and even lives,” one miner said.

They added that the projects reflect the government’s philosophy of “Nyika Inovakwa Nevene Vayo” and complement the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2), which promotes decentralised growth and community-level value creation..

To further attract private investment, the local authority is implementing measures to improve the ease of doing business. “We are streamlining processes and reducing operational costs to make Mberengwa a more attractive investment destination,” an official said.
