Zimbabwe delivers second aid consignment to Malawi

Zimbabwe has delivered a second consignment of 370 tonnes of maize to Malawi as part of its humanitarian assistance to flood victims, bringing the total aid closer to the 1 000-tonne pledge made under the ZimAid initiative.

Handing over the maize to Malawi’s Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Dr Justin Sadack K. Saidi, Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to Malawi, Dr Nancy Saungweme said the gesture demonstrated Zimbabwe’s commitment to regional solidarity and collective responsibility in times of crisis.

“Today’s handover of 370 tonnes of maize represents the second consignment under the ZimAid programme, moving us significantly closer to the 1 000-tonne pledge made by the Government and people of Zimbabwe to the people of Malawi.

This assistance is a direct response to the humanitarian needs arising from the devastating floods that displaced families and disrupted livelihoods across the country,”she said

Ambassador Saungweme added that the aid delivery followed a directive from President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who authorised the mobilisation of resources to support Malawi during the emergency.

“His Excellency President Dr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa personally authorised this humanitarian support, reaffirming Zimbabwe’s long-standing principle of standing with our neighbours during moments of difficulty.

This is not merely a transfer of food aid, but a reaffirmation of our shared values, our shared history, and our shared future as a region,” she added

Dr Saungweme said ZimAid has recalibrated its humanitarian assistance programmes to ensure efficiency and responsiveness in crisis situations.

“ZimAid continues to play a pivotal role by ensuring that relief is delivered efficiently, that displaced families receive tangible support, and that food security remains central during recovery.

Through these efforts, Zimbabwe positions itself as a reliable pillar of support within the Southern African region,”she noted.

Dr Saidi expressed gratitude to the Government of Zimbabwe, saying the maize consignment would contribute significantly to food security during the recovery phase.

“On behalf of the Government of the Republic of Malawi, we sincerely appreciate this timely and generous support from Zimbabwe. The maize will go a long way in assisting families affected by the floods as we continue to rebuild and restore normalcy,”he said

ZimAid is Zimbabwe’s humanitarian assistance framework designed to support neighbouring countries during natural disasters and emergencies.

Malawi has been grappling with widespread flooding that damaged infrastructure, displaced communities and heightened food insecurity. Zimbabwe’s assistance forms part of broader regional efforts to promote resilience, cooperation and collective recovery within Southern Africa.
