Zimbabwe’s national cricket team, the Chevrons, has been delayed in returning home from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup following the closure of sections of airspace across the Middle East.
The team had been scheduled to depart Delhi on Monday after completing their Super Eight campaign. However, major Gulf transit hubs have experienced widespread flight disruptions after regional airspace restrictions were imposed amid ongoing conflict, forcing the cancellation or rerouting of numerous international flights.
The Chevrons were expected to connect through Middle Eastern transit points before continuing to Harare, but the squad remains in India as officials seek alternative travel arrangements.
Head coach Justin Sammons said the developments unfolded rapidly, leaving the delegation awaiting confirmation of revised departure plans. The International Cricket Council (ICC) is working with airlines and aviation authorities to facilitate safe travel for affected teams and tournament staff.
The airspace restrictions have had broader implications for global aviation, particularly on routes linking Asia, Africa, and Europe. Airlines have been forced to adopt longer routes or suspend services, resulting in widespread delays.
Despite the logistical setback, team officials say morale remains high after Zimbabwe’s strong showing and advancement to the Super Eight stage. The Chevrons are expected to return to Harare once updated flight clearances are secured.
