ZRP urges public to assist accident victims, not record scenes

The Zimbabwe Republic Police has urged the public to put victims’ safety first at accident scenes instead of recording and circulating disturbing images on social media.

National Police Spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the growing practice of filming accident victims is not only insensitive but dangerous, as bystanders often neglect offering urgent help.

“The ZRP urges Zimbabweans to prioritise rendering assistance to victims of road traffic accidents, such as promptly notifying emergency services and offering first aid where possible, rather than capturing photographs or videos of horrific accident scenes and sharing them on social media,” Nyathi said.

He warned that the law will be enforced against individuals who continue to record or distribute graphic accident footage.

“The law will take its course on anyone who will be found taking photographs or videos of accident scenes,” he added.

Police referenced a recent crash in Masvingo involving the family of Ronald Mujuru, saying the incident demonstrated the consequences of bystanders focusing on recording instead of assisting.

Authorities stressed that the appeal is part of broader efforts to promote public safety, dignity, and respect for victims during emergencies. They urged the public to remember that offering help immediately can save lives and that social media content should never take precedence over human life.
