Youth farming drive gathers pace ahead of Independence

As Zimbabwe prepares for this year’s Independence Day celebrations to be held in Maphisa, Matabeleland South, youths in the province are scaling up agricultural production, with farming increasingly becoming a key driver of empowerment, livelihoods and rural economic growth.

Zanu-PF Matabeleland South youth league Political Commissar, Lance Phiri, is among young farmers leading the charge, having intensified operations at his farm in Entabeni, Mzingwane District, where he is growing sugar beans and maize on a combined five hectares.

Speaking in an interview, yesterday, Phiri confirmed that he has planted 2,5 hectares of sugar beans and expects to harvest between six and seven tonnes. His maize crop, also under 2,5 hectares, is projected to yield up to 10 tonnes, reflecting a strong production outlook for the season.

He said the progress being recorded by youths in agriculture is a direct result of the gains of independence, particularly access to land and increased support from Government.

“As the country prepares to celebrate independence, we must utilise the land productively and contribute meaningfully to national food security,” he said.

Phiri attributed his farming success to empowerment programmes being implemented under President Mnangagwa’s administration, which he said have improved access to inputs, mechanisation and training opportunities for young people.

“We are seeing tangible results on the ground. Agriculture is now a viable and sustainable source of livelihood for many youths, and more are beginning to take it seriously,” he said.

He also acknowledged the role played by liberation icons in securing land for Zimbabweans, saying the upcoming Independence celebrations serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made to achieve majority rule and economic freedom.

“The land is ours, and it is our duty to utilise it fully to improve our lives and contribute to national development,” he said.

Phiri noted that produce from farms such as his is expected to feed into formal markets, including major retail outlets, thereby strengthening food supply chains and boosting local economies.

He added that the Independence commemorations in Maphisa presents an opportunity for youths to reflect on their role in building the nation through productivity and innovation.

“We must take advantage of the opportunities that independence has brought and focus on production and self-reliance,” he said.

Phiri encouraged youths across the country to embrace agriculture, describing it as a practical pathway to economic empowerment and long-term national prosperity.
