Government has intensified efforts to combat drug and substance abuse, with authorities calling for collective action to curb the growing menace affecting communities across the country.
This emerged, yesterday, at Mucheke Stadium in Masvingo, where the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Ezra Ruvai Chadzamira, officiated at a Drug and Substance Abuse Awareness Campaign attended by senior Government officials, law enforcement agencies and community members.
Addressing the gathering Min Chadzamira warned that drug and substance abuse had reached alarming levels, particularly among youths, and posed a serious threat to the nation’s future.
“This is a national challenge that requires all of us to work together. Drug and substance abuse is destroying lives, families and communities. We must act now to protect our youths and secure the future of our country,” he said.
He urged parents, community leaders, churches and schools to play an active role in guiding young people and raising awareness about the dangers of drug abuse.
“We cannot leave this fight to law enforcement alone. Every sector of society has a responsibility to ensure that our communities are free from drugs,” said Hon. Chadzamira.
The Minister commended law enforcement agencies for their efforts in combating drug-related crimes and called for increased vigilance and reporting of offenders.
Speaking at the same event, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) national spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, stressed that the fight against drug abuse requires a united front.
“No one is safe from this challenge; even the working class is affected. This is a national problem that requires all of us to take responsibility,” he said.
Commissioner Nyathi conveyed a message from Commissioner-General of Police, Stephen Mutamba, reaffirming the police force’s commitment to intensifying operations against drug dealers and users.
“The police are working flat out to curb the use of drugs and drug substances. We urge citizens to report those engaging in such activities. No one is above the law,” he said.
He revealed that authorities are encountering new and sophisticated methods being used by drug traffickers, urging communities to remain alert and cooperate with police.
The awareness campaign forms part of the Government’s broader strategy under the Multi-Sectoral Drug and Substance Abuse Plan (2024–2030), which focuses on prevention, enforcement, treatment and rehabilitation.
The event also featured entertainment from the Zimbabwe Republic Police Band, drawing strong public participation as Government steps up efforts to build a drug-free society.
