Zimbabwe secures support for UNSC Bid from Montenegro

Zimbabwe has stepped up its campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2027–2028 term, with Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Professor Amon Murwira, securing support from Montenegro during a high-level engagement in Podgorica yesterday.

Prof. Murwira met Montenegro’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister, Filip Ibrahimović, where discussions centred on strengthening bilateral relations and unlocking economic cooperation.

In a statement Prof. Murwira described the growing international goodwill as encouraging, saying Zimbabwe remains committed to constructive global engagement.

“We are humbled by the growing international support for Zimbabwe’s bid.

Zimbabwe will continue to act as a bridge builder in global affairs, advocating for equality, inclusivity and the peaceful resolution of disputes,”Professor Murwira said

He emphasised that Zimbabwe’s foreign policy thrust is anchored on re-engagement and cooperation.

“Zimbabwe remains guided by its foreign policy of engagement and re-engagement, underpinned by the principle of ‘a friend to all, enemy to none.

Our commitment is to diplomacy, peaceful conflict resolution and equality among nations, “he added.

The meeting also produced concrete areas of cooperation, including tourism, agriculture, energy and mining. Prof. Murwira highlighted that the two countries are working towards deeper institutional ties.

“Zimbabwe and Montenegro are now working towards strengthening engagement through the establishment of diplomatic representation, starting with non-resident missions and progressing to full embassies,” he said.

He noted that economic collaboration would be broadened through participation in trade and investment platforms.

“We are looking at collaboration in tourism, including Zimbabwe’s participation in a major tourism meeting in Montenegro, as well as agriculture, energy and mineral beneficiation.

There is also scope for participation in international trade fairs such as ZITF and Mine Entra,”Professor Murwira noted

Prof. Murwira also pointed to Montenegro’s anticipated accession to the European Union by 2028 as a strategic opportunity.

“We are optimistic that Montenegro’s accession to the European Union will further enhance cooperation between Zimbabwe and the EU,” he said.

Reaffirming Zimbabwe’s diplomatic philosophy, Prof. Murwira said the country’s approach is rooted in inclusivity and mutual respect.

“Our belief is simple humanity thrives when it builds bridges, when all voices are heard, and when all nations, regardless of size, are treated as equals,” he added.

Zimbabwe is intensifying its global re-engagement drive as it seeks election to the UN Security Council, positioning itself as a proponent of multilateralism, peace and inclusive international cooperation.
