…. Lawmakers say project is strengthening health service delivery
The Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Peace and Security has commended the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) Solar Power Plant for enhancing energy security and supporting uninterrupted healthcare services, describing the project as a critical investment in the resilience of public institutions.
Speaking during a tour of the facility in Bulawayo yesterday, Chairperson of the Peace and Security Thematic Committee, Senator Irene Zindi, expressed satisfaction with the operations of the solar power plant, which she said was playing a vital role in ensuring reliable electricity supply for one of the country’s major referral hospitals.
“We are pleased with what we have observed at United Bulawayo Hospitals. The solar power plant is a practical demonstration of how investments in renewable energy can strengthen service delivery and ensure that critical institutions continue to function effectively even in the face of energy challenges,” she said.
She noted that reliable electricity was particularly important in the health sector, where interruptions could affect patient care and the operation of life-saving equipment.
“What we have seen here confirms that renewable energy solutions can significantly improve the efficiency and sustainability of public institutions. Hospitals require a stable power supply at all times, and this facility is helping to provide that assurance,” said Senator Zindi.
The senator added that the Committee’s mission was not only to evaluate existing projects but also to gather lessons that could inform future policy interventions and development programmes.
“Our objective is to understand how such initiatives are contributing to resilience, supporting essential services and advancing national development goals. The UBH solar plant is an example of a project that is yielding tangible benefits and deserves recognition.
The Committee would continue engaging stakeholders throughout the Matabeleland region to gain a comprehensive understanding of projects that promote sustainability and strengthen communities,” she added.
The fact-finding mission is expected to provide Parliament with insights into programmes that enhance energy security, improve public service delivery and contribute to the country’s broader development agenda.
The United Bulawayo Hospitals Solar Power Plant was established to supplement conventional electricity supplies and enhance energy reliability at the health institution.
The Parliamentary Thematic Committee on Peace and Security is conducting a fact-finding mission in Matabeleland to assess initiatives that strengthen resilience, support essential services and contribute to national development objectives.
